Finding Balance Among The Chaos

Life gets busy right?

And challenging! Well not more challenging, the challenges just change. One day rolls into the next and before you know it, your 40 something and wondering where did the years go? And perhaps – “What’s next for me?”.

It seems you go from buying nappy’s one day to buying condoms for the now grown babies. From singing nursery rhymes to sending “where are you?” text messages (if you’d only answer the first time I wouldn’t have to keep asking, right?).

Time seems to pass in a blur. A year feels like a week and a decade, like a month. Where did the years go? And now what do I do with myself?

We understand life changes and as it does, so do our roles in life. Perhaps the time warp is natures way of making sure we remained focused on the evolution of our species? But what do you do with yourself when you’re waiting to do the 2am pick up or to hear the last one arrive home safe, before you can finally sleep easy?

Is it time to turn your attention to yourself? Time to bump yourself up the to-do list of caring? And what happens if you’ve lost sight of yourself as the years rolled by? Who are you anyway? What makes you happy? And if you knew that, where in your busy if would you know where to start to incorporate activities that enhance your happiness?

Perhaps it’s the level of your fitness that got lost in the shuffle? Or sense of quiet, alone time to reflect, read, write or meditate? Or maybe the job you’ve always done for the convenience of working around family isn’t as satisfying any more? Or maybe, just maybe, you know what you want to be when you grow up and you are now ready to take the plunge?

Or perhaps like many, you can’t put your finger on what’s going on for you. Life is okay but it’s busy. You are tired and know it’s time to make some changes but where do you begin?

About 12 years ago I was walking along a beach with a friend and we stopped to sit on the sand and admire the sunset. He asked me what happiness and life balance meant for me. I picked up a stick and I drew a line in the sand with the words – Work, Rest and Play – across the top. And down the side I wrote – Mind, Body and Soul. I explained to him that for me, balance in life meant that all of these areas in life were getting some attention regularly. My happiness rested in having my needs met while also allowing for the pleasure of meeting the needs of those around me. At the time I was a single mum working, full time. While balance wasn’t always achievable on a daily basis, it was necessary for me to remain sane!!! I didn’t know at the time, but this became the first iteration of a tool I now use regularly myself and with my clients, to help unearth the areas in life that become unbalanced or need a little more attention. Along with knowing one’s values in life (another tool I will share with you another time), stopping to “check in” with Self, especially when life begins to feel too chaotic and my Soul is craving calm, the Soul Matrix gives me an instant picture of what’s working (hint – do more of this!!!), and what’s not.

Over the years the Soul Matrix has evolved and grown and I would like to share this tool with you now. You can download a copy here.

it’s pretty self explanatory but basically you give yourself a score out of 10 for each area in life. When you add them up it should become clear which areas are needing a little TLC. And maybe it might help you put your finger on where to begin finding yourself again?

Feel free to have a crack and share with me any insights you may have about yourself, or any ideas for improving the process at all? Just email me at admin@emmaskeggs.com or shoot me a message through Facebook.

Love and blessing as always,
